다문화교육의 의미에 대한 교육철학적 고찰

초록

본 연구의 목적은 다문화교육의 의미를 교육철학적 시각에서 탐색하는 것이다. 한국 사회가 급격히 다문화화 됨에 따라 다양한 문제가 발생하고 있고 이에 대한 대처가 요구되며 교육적인 측면에서도 이 문제에 대한 적절 한 대응이 요구된다. 이러한 대응은 다문화교육의 본질 및 특징들을 올바로 이해하는 것에서부터 시작된다. 바로 이러한 필요성에서 본 연구는 다문화교육 개념의 핵심구성요소인 문화, 다문화주의, 교육의 의미를 밝히고 이들 간의 상호관계를 분석한다. 다양한 시각에서 문화의 의미를 조명하고 이를 종합한 후 다문화주의의 개념 및 그 이념적 배경을 고찰한다. 플라톤, 듀이, 코메니우스 등의 사상에 근거하여 교육의 의미를 규명하고 이를 문화와 관련하여 고찰한다. 문화와 교육의 관계에서 독특성, 연관성, 상호교류라는 공통된 준거를 발견하고 이를 다문화 교육의 의미를 구성하는 핵심준거로 설정한다. 또한 문화, 다문화, 교육을 고찰하며 모든 문화는 사실상 다문화이 며 모든 교육은 사실상 다문화교육임을 밝혀낸다. 마지막으로 이 글은 다문화교육이 데리다의 아포리아(aporia) 개념과 같이 차이와 연결, 전통과 혁신, 자아와 타자 간의 모순적 관계임을 논하며 이러한 다문화교육의 의미를 실질적으로 뒷받침할 교육현장의 구체적인 목적들을 제시한다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discuss philosophically the meaning of multicultural education. As Korea changes into a multicultural society, various problems occur. In education, we need to respond properly the multicultural changes. A good respond begins from a proper understanding of the nature or characteristics of multicultural education. At the necessity, this study analyze meanings and relationships of culture, multiculturalism, education as the core sub-concepts of multicultural education. Meanings of culture are presented through various perspectives and synthesized, and then the concept and idealogical backgrounds of multiculturalism are discussed. Meanings of education are explained through educational thoughts of Plato, Dewey and Comenius, and this study deals with the relationship between education and culture. The core criteria of multicultural education such as particularity, relatedness, and interaction are found through the relationship between education and culture. Furthermore, this study, through examining culture, education and multiculturalism, finds that all cultures are multicultures and that all educations are multicultural educations. Finally, this study discusses Derrida's concept, aporia in relation to the conflicting nature of multicultural education between difference and connection, tradition and innovation, and the self and the other. Additionally, it presents practical purposes for schools in order to support concretely the meaning of multicultural education. In multicultural education, schools should be organized into various members and curriculum with diverse cultural backgrounds. Teachers should understand the originality and particularity of each student. They should guide students to realize themselves and to interact with teachers and other students through understanding differences. Students would rather explore various viewpoints than receive teachings of textbooks and teachers. All multicultural educational practices are realized through a complete knowledge of the dialogical relation between difference and connection as the nature of multicultural education.
