Abstract

This paper analyzes the narrative strategies and literary functions of pseudotranslation through the case of Walladmor, published between 1823 and 1824. Although Walladmor was presented as a translation of a new novel by Walter Scott, it was in fact an original fictional work created by a German writer under the pseudonym Alexis. Framed as a “free translation,” the novel employs various paratextual devices—such as an anonymous translator, a fictional dedication, translationese expressions, and footnotes—to simulate the appearance of a translated text. These disguises transform the external form of translation into a central narrative strategy. A particularly noteworthy aspect of Walladmor is that it was “retranslated” into English in 1824 by Thomas De Quincey. De Quincey described the English version as “freely translated from the English of Sir Walter Scott into German, and now freely translated from the German into English,” thereby turning translation into a medium of literary play. This double pseudotranslation structure—reconstructing a non-existent original into its supposed source language—blurs the boundary between translation and creation. This study argues that, through an examination of the strategies of fictionalization in the German and English versions of Walladmor, translation can operate not merely as a mediating act but as a narrative form capable of reconstructing textual origins and reconfiguring authorship. These two texts, which conceal the absence of an original and establish a new narrative starting point, destabilize the traditional hierarchy between translation and creation, original and derivative, and exemplify the “afterlife” of translation through continuous reinterpretation and reception.
