초록

본 연구는 로버트 톰(Robert Thom)이 1839년에 영어로 번역한 <<왕교란의 영원한 원한(The Lasting Resentment of Miss Keaou Lwan Wang)>>을 중심으로 문학텍스트의 번역과 변형 과정을 고찰한다.

Abstract

This study examines the translation and transformation of literary texts, focusing on Robert Thom’s 1839 English translation of Wang Jiaoluan(The Lasting Resentment of Miss Keaou Lwan Wang). During the early 19th century, as direct English translations from Chinese became possible, Thom’s work marked a significant advancement in fidelity and editorial presentation compared to earlier translations. This paper analyzes Thom’s translation strategies, particularly in handling cultural elements, poetry, and his editorial choices. Thom sought to balance fidelity to the original text with the readability and comprehension of English-speaking readers, employing literal translation, annotation, and cultural adaptation. Additionally, his use of paratextual elements such as footnotes, illustrations, and typographical adjustments provided English readers with insights into Chinese culture. However, his translation also reflects subjective interventions that shaped the interpretation of the source text. By exploring these translation techniques, this study highlights the role of Thom as both a translator and a cultural mediator, offering insights into the broader dynamics of early English translations of Chinese literature.
