Abstract

Horse is an animal motif which is treated consistently from cave painting to contemporary art. The purpose of the research is analysis of horse image as a kind of art motif which keep stimulating imagination in creation-activity. In other words, the research is about universality of horse motif. Bachelard studied about imagination’s rule and emergence of image in his research methodology which there is a rule in imagination and it can be classified. Through the image research based on materiality of the object, Bachelard deals with image which is not connected with the superficial form but connected with mental activity of imagination. According to the material imagination, all images are classified into the 4 elements which are air, fire, earth, and water. The 4 elements are accepted not a scientific level but a main frame of Western imagination as the meaning of all natural elements in the world. Bachelard says, a favorite element of an artist is come out to the artist’s works unconsciously. The image classification through the 4 elements is an analysis about universality of horse image based on horse’s materiality, and also an understanding about the moment of the creation which an artist has just started his/her artwork. Horse reveals the materiality of air as the movement and flying beyond the boundary of present. The fire having both side of creation and destruction reveals its energy as an revolutional change and an authority in human history from when the horse came into the human society. The earth image of creation’s root is exposed by wonderless about the horse mechanism as a living being. The water image carrying life and soul are revealed its materiality by interchanging of mental and sense through horse’s affinity. The element’s image of horse has universality value as the power having the potential of new energy in nowness of one’s sense and the resonance of producing ripple in human being’s mentality.
