Abstract

The purposes of this study was to investigate 1) the relationship among adiposity, fitness and metabolic syndrome risk factors, 2) the effects of physical activity class entitled “fitness development” on adiposity, fitness and metabolic syndrome risk factors among 1st year Korean university students. A total of 105(Male∶67, Female∶38) students were included to analyze the relationship among adiposity, fitness and metabolic syndrome risk factors. Among 105 participants, 67 students participated in three times per week physical activity class “fitness development” and 38 students participated in once a week physical activity classes. To measure physical fitness, push-up, sit-up, 1-mile run were used. To measure adiposity, body mass index (BMI), bioimpedence analysis (Inbody IHU070R, Biospace, Korea), and waist circumference were used. For metabolic syndrome risk factors, waist-circumference (WC), fasting glucose, triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were used. The results showed 1) Students with higher physical fitness had significantly decreased percent body fat, WC and TG. 2) Students with lower BMI had significantly decreased percent body fat, WC, TG and increased HDL-C. 3) Students participated in physical activity class “fitness development” significant changed fat free mass, fasting glucose, sit-up, and push-up. Students who participated physical activity class “fitness development” significant improved HDL-C, TG, sit-up, and push-up compared with students who participated in other once a week physical activity classes. In conclusion, participation of university fitness class significantly improved fitness levels which were associated with risk factors of metabolic syndrome.
