The Effect of Environmental Education Using Picture Books on Environmental Literacy and Ecological Sensitivity of Elementary Lower Grade Students

This study aimed to investigate the effects of environmental education using picture books on the environmental literacy and ecological sensitivity of lower grade elementary school students. The subjects of the study were a class of second grade students at D Elementary School in Metropolitan City B. A pre-test was conducted on the environmental literacy and ecological sensitivity of the research group before class, and then a creative experiential activity class using picture books was applied for a certain period of time, and a post-test was conducted and the results were analyzed. The results of this study are as follows. First, environmental education using picture books had a positive effect on the environmental literacy of lower grade elementary school students. The research group that applied the environmental education in this study showed significant improvements in all of the definitional and behavioral sub-areas of environmental literacy. Second, environmental education using picture books had a positive effect on the ecological literacy of lower grade elementary school students. As described above, environmental education using picture books had a positive effect on the environmental literacy and ecological sensitivity of lower grade elementary school students, and it is judged to be an effective learning method that can help lower grade elementary school students develop positive perceptions and correct sensibilities regarding the environment and ecosystem.
