Abstract
Performing memory-work on Cheju 4.3 by recording, re-envisioning, and re-collecting its haunting and unending past is visual artist Jane Jin Kaisen. Kaisen was born in South Korea, not coincidentally to a Cheju family, and adopted to Denmark as an infant. Her video documentary Reiterations of Dissent moves between slow-motioned nature sequences, tight shots of excavations sites, shamanic rituals, archival footage, and sweeping panoramas. Against such images, a voice speaks out, one by one, amid long, suffocating silences. Without recourse to what the images signify and who remembers, viewers are forced to re-collect information from the visible and invisible/unvisible spaces presented on-screen. Reiterations of Dissent emphasizes the fragmented complexity of Cheju 4.3 and challenges viewers to understand historical knowledge as a demanding, process-oriented, and necessarily partial endeavor. Drawing on Avery F. Gordon’s notion of “ghosts,” this paper frames Kaisen’s Reiterations of Dissent as a “ghost story” to argue that Kaisen stages a ghostly imagining of and interruption into Cheju 4.3. The documentary traces fragments and incongruities and, in so doing, offers a new and ethical aesthetics to seeing Cheju 4.3. It is one that unsettles and draws viewers to feel and recognize rather than to know.
