Abstract
This paper explores the educational connections of Thomas Elyot and Plutarch. By admitting Elyot’s indebtedness to Plutarch, an argument is made for conceptualizing Plutarch’s The Education of Children as the main source of Elyot’s chapters on education in The Governor. Since Elyot translated himself Plutarch’s treatise into English, it is possible to assume that Elyot had drawn on Plutarch for his discussion of education in The Governor. In the first half, the paper examines Elyot’s complaint about ‘the decay of learning among gentlemen’ in early Tudor England. Elyot thought that the pride, avarice, and negligence of parents were at fault, as well as ‘the fewness of good grammarians.’ It is followed by a discussion of Elyot’s plan for its restoration based upon his ideal system of mental and physical training for young governors. In the second half, on the other hand, the paper deals with the issue of how Plutarch’s ideas on education are present in Elyot’s manuals for the education of prospective governors. In tracing Plutarch’s influences, at least three things deserve our highlighting: (1) Elyot followed Plutarch closely in stressing the benefit of learning, (2) Elyot considerces, atimportance of ‘a wise and cunning’ master as did Plutarch, and (3) Elyot repeated Plutarch’s recommendation in advocating humanistic curriculum and method. Elyot’s adherence to Plutarch’s educational opinion indicates that he had Plutarch’s The Education of Children before him. It is at this point that the attempts to emphasize the similarity of Elyot’s ideas to Plutarch’s, establish Elyot’s identity as a humanist educational thinker, and encourage further research regarding Elyot’s role and position in the English pedagogy of the sixteenth century really begin.
