Abstract
Organizations today have come to value employees’ concerns, suggestions, and ideas for effective decision-making for corporate management. More and more firms are securing a diverse array of employee voice opportunity to pay closer attention, in hopes of responding to employees’ needs and transforming their novel and constructive opinions into a valued organizational asset. Yet, existing work has neglected the importance of employee voice opportunity in the team context, overlooking its impact on employees’ work experiences, after-work lives, and even in general social realms beyond work as well. To complement the extant research, this study draws on employee voice literature and spillover theory to investigate how within-team employee voice opportunity is positively associated with one’s general well-being, encompassing life satisfaction and perception of societal influence. To test the hypotheses, path analysis was performed with survey response data collected from 364 employees across 71 teams from large conglomerates in South Korea. Results indicated when there are more within-team opportunities for employee voice, employees show a higher level of life satisfaction and perception of societal influence. Moreover, this effect was mediated by job satisfaction and was also significantly stronger for employees with a more proactive personality. Overall, our findings suggest that organizations should make efforts to create an environment in which employee voices are closely heard, not only at the organizational-level but also at the team-level, which constitutes a more practical business unit. It is also implied that these efforts further extend to have a positive impact on employee well-being, both at work and in life outside of work. Implications for future research on employee voice opportunity in the team context and non-work related areas are discussed.
