본 연구는 가구유형별 및 성별에 따라 기부행위 자체에 대한 선호의 차이가 있는지 고찰하였다. 독신가구의 경우 남성과 여성은 선호하는 기부분야가 다르다는것이 관찰되지만 총소득이 총기부금에 끼치는 한계성향은 다르지 않은 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 인구통계학적 변수들이 총기부금 지출에 미치는 영향에 있어서도독신가구의 경우에는 성별 간의 유의한 차이가 보이지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 부부가구의 경우 가구 소비지출을 통제한 상태에서 개별 배우자의 소득이남편과 아내의 총기부금 지출에 미치는 영향이 다르게 나타났으며 남편과 아내의학력과 연령으로 대표되는 인구통계학적 변수들의 영향이 비대칭적인 모습을 보였다. 이러한 실증적 결과로부터 부부가구의 경우에는 부부의 협상력이 각자의총기부금 지출의 중요한 결정요인이라고 추론할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 기부결정에 있어서 독신가구와 부부가구 간 차이는 협상력의 유무에 일부 기인한 것이라볼 수 있다.
Abstract
We examine how charitable giving is influenced by gender and household type. Looking first at single-person households, we find men and women have significantly different tastes for giving, but do not observe a difference in marginal propensity to contribute. No significant difference is found in the effects of socio-demographic covariates on total contributions between them. For the case of couples, socio-demographic factors such as age and education seem to affect differently on total contributions between husband and wife. Husband’s marginal propensity to contribute depends on only his income, while wife’s marginal propensity to contribute depends on both her income and her spouse’s. Our empirical findings show that there can be bargaining power over charitable giving between husband and wife. It can partly explain different patterns of charitable giving behaviors between single-person households and couples. Our results give new insights into both the demographics of charitable giving and the costliness of household bargaining.
