Abstract
It is not simple to interpret political and military discourses and slogans related to solidarity between Korea and China such as “Chinese-Korean Friendship,” “Solidarity of the Oppressed Peoples,” “Common Anti-Japanese Front of Korea and China,” and “United Front of Korean and Chinese Peoples.” It is because they have an aspect for the modern interpretation and management of “taking control of a group by using another group” adopted by both Korea and China to utilize each other’s power to bring down Japanese imperialism in addition to the traditional standard, “the teeth feel the cold without the lips,” and the modern concept of “internationalism.” Kim Sung Suk had a strong tendency as a man of letters, and the “political and cultural desire and design” of his countrymen(Korean people) for the foreigners(Chinese people) were projected in his writings published in Chinese. Thus, his theory for solidarity between Korea and China provides a viewpoint and methodology that is still valid today to figure out the discourses and slogans related to their solidarity based on their complicated relations and propose a new model to China. There are clear limitations to Kim’s theory for solidarity between Korea and China, which developed from a part of the “solidarity of the oppressed peoples in East Asia around China” shared by the left and right wings of Korea and China in the 1930s to the “United Front of Chinese and Korean Peoples” with a strong nature of military alliance between the two countries. Kim’s theory for solidarity between Korea and China based on proletarian internationalism during his membership in the League of the Left-Wing Writers in China failed to secure the complete independent nature of Korea’s Independence Movement as it proceeded as a substructure of China’s movement to save the nation. The United Front of Korean and Chinese Peoples pushed forward after the Sino-Japanese War did not express Kim’s perceptions of China and his feelings toward the country. Kim gave up his ideology and artistry in his theory to highlight the nature of the “anti-Japanese” propaganda. As the subjects of the “United Front of Korean and Chinese Peoples” on the Korean side were unified into the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, Kim could not develop his theory for solidarity between Korea and China further which he conceived as a “nationalist socialist.” Due to these causes, his theory for solidarity between Korea and China did not have much success in securing ideological values transcending the times. However, the design and spread process of Kim’s theory for solidarity between Korea and China across China holds noteworthy values in the history of anti-Japanese independence movements and the history of cultural exchanges between Korea and China in the following aspects: the practice of promoting solidarity between Korea and China went together with establishing the theory simultaneously from start to finish; Kim systematically developed his theory for solidarity between Korea and China rooted in his specific perceptions of Korea-China relations based on his experience and understanding of China’s organizational and cultural systems; his thinking was based on “intertextuality” to involve Chinese people from all walks of life in the discussions about Korea-China solidarity actively especially demonstrated by the publication of Korean National Front and spread his discourse about the “United Front of Korean and Chinese Peoples” acceptable to Chinese people by reviewing and managing Chinese texts he secured in this process actively; and all these were made possible thanks to his political sacrifice as his risked his life in the persecution of Kuomintang and his expulsion from the Chinese Communist Party.
