Abstract
This paper provides a summary of the recent excavation and investigation of Kim Sung-sook’s works in Chinese. The investigation confirmed that five books were published in China including his works and translations in Chinese and that four pieces of his writing were published in Chinese newspapers and magazines. The study found the original copy of his Theory of Japanese Economy and learned that his Future Path of Dialectics was published 11 times in total in 1938~1952. His 2 used to be known as a translation, but it turned out to be his original work. It was once published in the title of Student Movements in a Semi-Colonial Nation. In addition, his translation A Nation’s Socialism Theory and his work Issues with the Unified Front of the Joseon People were also published. The study went further to do research on the publication of his writing and excavated four additional pieces of his writing published in Chinese newspapers and magazines including “The Suppression of Japanese Financial Capital in Agricultural Villages in Joseon,” “The Outline of Small and Weak Ethnic Groups in Asia: Joseon,” “Anti-Japanese War and the Oppressed Ethnic Groups in East Asia,” and “What Is Needed in a Propaganda against the Enemy.” This investigation happened online and offline at the same time with meaningful results mainly from online searches. The investigation basically left out Kim Sung-sook’s works in Chinese that were not computerized. Keeping these investigation limitations in mind, the study sorted out the outcomes as follows: First, the investigation verified that descriptions about Kim Sung-sook’s works in Chinese from the author himself and Kim San were mostly true. As for Profile of Woonam Kim Sung-Sook, most of his works and translations were found in the body already. As for Arirang, only some were verified due to investigation limitations. Secondly, the investigation results verified that Kim Sung-sook had the most influences on the Chinese through his Chinese texts among Koreans that were active between the late 19th century and the establishment of diplomatic relations between South Korea and China in 1992. As it is evident in the 11th printing of Future Path of Dialectics at least, his traces as a translator surpassed any other Koreans intellectuals that were active in China in the 20th century. He was also recognized as a scholar and thinker for his academic achievements so highly that he was invited to Guangxi Provincial Normal School that opened in 1932. Finally, the study once again found that he was different from other anti-Japanese fighters in some aspects. As an independence activist, he was also active at Chinese organizations such as the Chinese Left-Wing Writers Union and Guangxi Provincial Normal School along with his Chinese wife Du Junhui. He had impacts around China through active writing activities in Chinese. These findings demonstrate that he had a pragmatic personality with no big gap between the realization of his “personal desire” and his involvement in the Independence Movement. The present study raises questions about the need to take a new look at Kim Sung-sook with this three-dimensional character and area of activities.
