Abstract
This article examines Seo Walbo(徐曰甫), a pioneer of the aviational independence movement based in China, and his activities in the field of aviation. Seo sought to utilize the latest weaponry in the armed independence movement. After seeking asylum in China, he pursued secondary education in Beijing as a prerequisite for studying military science. When Duan Qirui assembled the War Participation Army, he enlisted in the Non-Commissioned Officer’s Training Corps (軍士敎導團) and was later promoted to officer. He then entered Nanyuan Aviation School, which had been restructured in the British style, becoming the first Korean aviator in China. Seo dreamed of an armed independence movement utilizing air power. His plan was to establish an air corps of 60 personnel, beginning with a small number of Korean aviators trained within Chinese military. These trained pilots would then instruct others, allowing for an expansion of the aviators in a short time. Seo successfully trained Choi Yongdeok as an aviator by encouraging Korean students in Beijing to pursue aviation. However, his plan was frustrated as many aviation schools in Beijing suspended their educational programs due to the conflicts among Chinese warlords. Seo participated in China’s internal conflicts, not in support of any particular warlord but in pursuit of his vision. He took part in the Second Zhili-Fengtian War and Kuominchun-Fengtian War against the Fengtian army. However, he died in an accident during a test flight. His wartime experience reinforced his belief in the necessity of aviation power, and he sought to gain China’s support, anticipating more of aviation resources available once stability was restored. On the other hand was the presence of Zhang Zuolin, a pro-Japanese warlord who suppressed Koreans in Manchuria. Seo’s dream of an aviation-based independence movement was rooted in his belief in aviation power, and his vision continued after his death through his comrades, who shared the same recognition.
