Abstract

This research aims to compare low-sighted students' reading efficiency according to reading text media and individuals' characteristics by comparing the silent reading speed, loud reading speed, reading accuracy, reading comprehension, and reading continuity when they read large letters and use a magnifying glass and read normal-size letters. To this end, the research targeted four low-sighted students in the middle school department of B Blind People's School, tested their reading, evaluated their reading efficiency according to reading tex media, and compared the result with the reading efficiency of university students according to their individual sight and reading characteristics. As a result, first, low-sighted students, when using a magnifying glass and reading normal-size letters, had a higher reading efficiency than when they read big letters. Second, low-sighted students' reading efficiency according to their individual characteristics and text media differed according to their sight and reading characteristics. This research found that low-sighted students have a higher reading efficiency when using a magnifying glass and reading normal-size letters than when reading big letters, but that the reading efficiency differ according to individuals's sight and reading characteristics. As such, efforts should be made to systemize the evaluation of text media reading in consideration of low-sighted students' sight and reading characteristics.
