연구자들은 폭넓게 무당파로 지칭되는 집단을 보다 상세하게 이해하기 위해 시민역량, 투표행위, 정치냉소 측면에서 편향적무당파와 순수무당파 간의 차이를 규명하고자 했다. 아울러 약한당파층과 구별되는 무당파 고유의 특성 또한 함께 살펴봤다. 정치관심, 정치지식, 정치참여, 투표의향 등 전반적인 시민역량을 비교한결과 편향적무당파의 경우 정치관심과 정치지식 수준에서는 약한당파층과 유의미한 차이가 없었다. 그러나 정치참여와 투표의향 측면에서는 편향적무당파가 약한당파층보다 낮은 수준을 보였다. 전반적으로 시민역량이 가장 낮은 집단은가깝게 느끼는 정당조차 없는 순수무당파였다. 순수무당파는 편향적무당파와 비교해서 낮은 수준의 시민역량을 보여, 무당파 내에서도 두 집단은 상이한 성격을지니고 있음을 보여준다. 또한 늦게 투표 결정을 하는 지연결정투표 성향도 순수무당파 사이에서 뚜렷하게 높게 나타났다. 특정 정당이나 후보를 떨어뜨리기 위한 선택인 부정적투표 성향과 정치냉소 수준은 집단 간 유의미한 차이를 보이지않았다.
Abstract
This study aims to gain a more nuanced understanding of the group broadly referred to as “nonpartisans” by distinguishing between independent leaners and pure independents in terms of civic competence, voting behavior, and political cynicism. Additionally, it examines the unique characteristics that differentiate nonpartisans from weak partisans. A comparative analysis of overall civic competence—measured by political interest, political knowledge, political participation, and voting behavior—revealed that independent leaners showed similar levels of political interest and political knowledge to weak partisans. However, their political participation and intention to vote were lower than those of weak partisans. Pure independents, who do not feel close to any political party, exhibited the lowest level of civic competence overall. The findings highlight that even within the nonpartisan group, independent leaners and pure independents constitute distinct subgroups with differing characteristics. Notably, pure independents showed a significantly higher tendency to decide late on voting. However, no significant differences were found among the groups regarding negative voting decisions made to oppose a particular party or candidate or the degree of political cynicism, which remained similarly high across all groups. The analysis is based on data collected during the 2024 22nd National Assembly elections in South Korea.
