Abstract

The keyword that has emerged in recent elections in South Korea and the United States is no longer “finding a candidate close to me,” but rather “finding a candidate I dislike less,” known as “negative voting.” This study analyzes whether this trend of negative voting is led by the cynical attitude towards politics held by independents, based on data from the 2022 presidential election and the 2012 presidential election. Building on theoretical and empirical discussions related to existing negative partisanship, the study shows the distribution of Positive-versus-Negative Voting (PNV) scores, a scale used to evaluate whether attitudes towards candidates chosen by respondents are based on positive or negative emotions. Additionally, the study analyzes whether the distribution of PNV scores varies depending on the respondents’ partisanship. The analysis reveals that in the 2012 presidential election, the proportion of negative voting was high among independents, but in the 2022 presidential election, the proportion of negative voting was higher among partisans. This consistent result was confirmed in the multinomial logistic regression analysis including control variables.
