Abstract

This study aims to implement utility value interventions in elementary school science classes over an extended period and to explore the practical aspects and educational effects that emerge during this process. Previous studies on utility value intervention were mostly conducted as one-time experiments or as separate programs outside regular curriculum classes, which limited the verification of sustainable application in real educational settings. Therefore, this study used an action research methodology to implement utility value intervention within regular science classes for 97 fifth-grade students across four classes over one semester (16 weeks). The intervention activities consisted of self-generated writing conducted during the last 10 minutes of each class and presentation of communal utility value information. These activities were progressively developed through four cycles following a cyclical process of ‘planning-action and observation-reflection’. Data collection was conducted through utility value perception tests, writing task analysis, class journals, focus group interviews, and open-ended surveys. The results showed that students’ utility value perception improved significantly, and their writing levels continuously improved. Additionally, students showed behavioral changes by applying what they wrote to their real lives, and their interest and motivation to learn science increased. This study demonstrates that utility value interventions can be successfully integrated into regular elementary science classes and can effectively enhance students’ ability to connect scientific knowledge with their lives and apply it in practice.
