Abstract
This study examines how the surveillance regime and hygienist discourse of the modern city pathologically reconfigure individual gaze and subjectivity, set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Buenos Aires. To this end, it conducts a comparative analysis of Horacio Quiroga’s Los perseguidos (1905) and Roberto Arlt’s El jorobadito (1933). Between the 1900s and the 1930s, amidst mass immigration and rapid urbanization, Argentina established a state surveillance system to classify and manage its citizens. While Quiroga’s text captures the nascent paranoid anxiety stemming from the anonymity and surveillance of the modern city, Arlt’s text demonstrates how this pathology escalates into a logic of social loathing and exclusion. Although the two works operate through distinct mechanisms—defined here as “pursuit and fusion” and “judgment and expulsion,” respectively—both arrive at the same catastrophic conclusion: the disintegration of subjectivity. Ultimately, this study aims to elucidate the paradox wherein the modern subject’s attempt to exclude the Other inevitably leads to self-destruction.
