Reading and Writing the World with Mathematics
Abstract
This study systematically reviews literature on the critical redefinition of mathematical literacy, integrating perspectives from critical mathematics education, ethnomathematics, social justice–oriented mathematics, and 21st-century numeracy. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, forty-eight peer-reviewed studies (1999–2025) were analyzed from ERIC, Web of Science, RISS, and Google Scholar. Findings reveal a conceptual shift from functional and cognitive skills toward a multidimensional competence encompassing critical reflection, cultural contextualization, social engagement, and democratic citizenship. Core frameworks include Skovsmose’s Mathemacy (reflective knowing), D’Ambrosio’s Matheracy (cultural reasoning), Gutstein’s Reading and Writing the World with Mathematics (social justice), and Goos et al.’s 21st-century numeracy model (critical orientation). The review underscores tensions among related terms—mathematical literacy, numeracy, quantitative literacy, mathemacy, and matheracy— and argues that mathematics education should cultivate critical and active citizenship rather than focus solely on procedural proficiency.
