Abstract
This study examines the theories in international relations dealing with the relationship between power distribution among major powers and peace and stability in the international system—namely, power transition theory, hegemonic stability theory, and balance of power theory. The study empirically examines the cases of militarized conflicts occurring between 1885 and 2002, primarily focusing on the relationships between the existence of a hegemonic power and militarized conflicts as well as between the systemic power concentration and conflicts. The study provides mixed empirical findings, including empirical evidence for power transition theory and hegemonic stability theory from the studies of international system and for balance of power theory from studies of the Asian region. Based on the empirical findings, the study argues that more thorough discussions and efforts are urgently needed among international relations scholars and policy makers regarding close cooperation and coordination rather than conflict and tensions between the current top two powers in the system, the U.S. and China, for diverse issues ranging from economic to military questions to ensure peace and stability in the system and in Northeast Asia.
