Abstract

This study aims to systematically analyze author–co-author relationships in the Journal of Educational Technology by examining the status of these relationships and performing a co-author network analysis. The research involved 683 researchers who contributed as authors and co-authors to 695 articles published between 2003 and 2023. The analysis focused on the current status and trends of authors and co-authors, the dynamics of co-author relationships, and the role of universities as key institutions in academic research. The findings of the study are as follows. First, the number of co-authored papers is increasing annually, with co-authorship most commonly occurring in pairs and triples. Most authors have published only one article, and the number of authors decreases considerably as the number of articles increases. Second, the co-author network, comprising 643 co-authors contained 1,091 links, a density of 0.005, and a diameter of 13, indicating a highly complex visualization network. Cluster analysis, revealed a total of 67 clusters, with 47 clusters consisting of fewer than 10 authors and 20 clusters containing 10 or more authors. Third, the network of representative authors based on their affiliations demonstrated that universities were effectively serving as ivory towers. Notably, Seoul National University, Ewha Woman’s University, Hanyang University, Korea National University of Education, Chonnam National University, and Kyungpook National University were key institutions in the Journal of Educational Technology. The network visualizations highlighted the connections between these authors and scholars. Fourth, the author–co-author relationships in the Journal of Educational Technology and the Journal of Educational Media and Information exhibited very similar characteristics. Thus, the results of the study were able to identify the cooperative relationships between researchers in educational technology. These findings were discussed and implications and suggestions for follow-up research were made.
