Abstract

The funeral of Queen Inseon served as an important turning point in the reorganization of state funeral rituals in the late Joseon period. As the first naesang(內喪) since the Manchu Invasion of 1636, its proceedings were recorded in sources such as the Uigwe (儀軌, royal protocols) and the Deungnok (謄錄, official registers), which were preserved and later utilized as new precedents. King Hyeonjong, in presiding over the funeral of his mother Queen Inseon, refined specific procedures in accordance with the principle of separating inner and outer domains within a naesang, including the dispatch of the gobusa and the performance of the jaegunggachil These arrangements were carried on in the naesang of King Sukjong’s reign and were formally codified in the 18th century Gukjosangnyebopyeon Among these proceedings, the waterborne funeral procession(水路發靷), uniquely implemented in Queen Inseon’s case, involved highly complex procedures. King Hyeonjong proposed the use of a water route in consideration of the burden placed on the yeosagun (轝士軍), but this required the improvement of waterways, the preparation of vessels, and the reconfiguration of the ritual ranks. Unlike the land procession, the waterborne rite employed the spirit-seat vessel (靈座船) and the palace-coffin vessel (欑宮船) to establish a temporary waterborne binjeon (殯殿). Although an Yeongakjeon (靈幄殿) was constructed on land as a temporary hall to enshrine the coffin, the difficulty of raising and lowering it led to the decision to conduct the overnight repose on water instead. Thus, with the yeongjwaseon and changungseon prepared, rites such as the joseokjeon (朝夕奠) were held on the water, marking a significant departure from the land-based processions. Moreover, records concerning the return procession by water (水路返虞) reveal the differing ritual status of the funeral departure and return. For instance, the honbaekyo-yeo vessel (魂帛腰轝船) was replaced by the ujuyoyeo vessel (虞主腰轝船) and placed before the sinryeonseon vessel (神輦船), thereby adjusting the arrangement of ritual objects and personnel to emphasize the significance of the return rite.
