Abstract

In recent years, there has been a lot of debate about classical education. The most important of these debates is how to get students to read the classics proactively. The term 'proactive reading' is used in the sense that students read the classics actively on their own, rather than just passively listening to the teacher's lessons. In order to guide students to read independently, the use of pictorial materials is considered to be effective. This paper is a test paper on the use of pictorial materials in classical education. The paper focuses on "The Last Days of Noto-dono" in The Tale of the Heike, Vol. 11. Notodono-dono's Last Days" is a passage from the final battle between the Genji clans and Heike clans, the Dannoura Battle, which tells of the struggle between Notodono on the Heike side and Minamoto no Yoshitsune on the Genji side, and of Notodono's final days. Several paintings depicting the story gave a picture of the two men's personalities. The paintings depict the two characters: the brave and daring Noto-dono and the quick and light Yoshitsune, who was quick in his judgement and light in his carriage. The paintings captured and depicted the respective characteristics of the two men. On the other hand, there were also paintings that depicted the battle from a bird's eye view and depicted people in small sizes, so that the fragility of human existence could be read into the paintings. In this way, the paintings illuminated various aspects of the story. It was argued that by reading the text with the question of what these paintings depicted, pupils read the story proactively.
