리차드 러트(Richard Rutt)의 『九雲夢』 英譯本의底本 활용양상과 번역전략 연구

Abstract

This study aims to review R. Rutt's English version, A Nine Cloud Dream, based on his translation principles and text understanding. According to ‘Introduction’, Rutt clarified the orignal and secondary text he used. Shortly, he used Yi Ka-won text(李家源本), making further amendments and additions in the light of the Seoul National University text. Yi Ka-won text and Seoul National University text do not have much difference in the overall narrative structure, but there are some gaps between the two texts, such as detailed description, arrangement of the epic structure, and dialogue etc. Therefore, I identified the way of Rutt’s utilizing source and secondary text for a translation criticism. In conclusion, Rutt used Yi Ka-won text as the source text and made amendments and additions in consideration of the Seoul National University version. However, he did not supplement some elements that may cause a sense of distance to Western readers with different intellectual and cultural backgrounds. Sometimes some phrases in the secondary text were selected and translated. Even Rutt adapted some phrases, showing his visibility. Rutt stated his text review, translation principles and the target reader in the ‘Preface.’ Accordingly, the translation criticism was conducted based on them mainly focusing on the translation strategies that Rutt applied to the translational text. The translator reorganized the overall narrative structure of the translational text concentrating on the topics of ‘women’ and ‘space.’ He used strategies such as ‘addition’ and ‘explicitation.’ Moreover, Rutt used 'superordinate' and ‘localization’ to narrow the cultural difference.
