Abstract
Objectives Social media is widely used as a major communication means for managing an organization’s reputation. In this study, we reviewed the theoretical discussion on crisis communication that affects the reputation of organizations in the social media era and suggested a new direction for reputation recovery and the need for research by adding a new discussion on the changing crisis ecosystem. Methods A systematic review was adopted as the research method, which comprehensively collected and analyzed existing research data to answer the research questions. Results Through systematic literature review, organizational crises in the age of social media have been analyzed and summarized, focusing on the expectancy violation theory and secondary crisis communication. The expectancy violation theory explains that an organization’s reputation is the public’s expectation of the organization and suggests its applicability to the study of organizational reputation in the PR area. Secondary crisis communication discussed the possibility of reverse secondary crisis communication through how organizational crises in the age of social media are formed and spread. Conclusions This study reviewed the relationship between the crisis and reputation of an organization that has come along with the development of communication technology and suggested the research direction and necessity for reputation management combining intuition and strategic reasoning in the future crisis ecosystem.
