연구 목적: 본 연구는 태평양철도와 로스앤젤레스의 연계, 산페드로항의 건설과 철도의 연결 등을 통해 태평양 연안과 미대륙이 보다 긴밀히 연계되는 과정속에서 로스앤젤레스의 초기 형성과정을 살펴보는 것이 목적이다. 연구 방법: 이를 위해 역사적 접근방법을 적용하여 문헌검토 고찰 등을 통해 초기 로스엔젤레스 형성 과정에 대한 역사적 특수성을 규명하였다. 연구 내용: 골드러시 이후에도 그저 조그마한 마을에 불과하였던 로스앤젤레스는 미국 동부와 서부를 보다 빠르게 연결하여 환태평양 무역거점에 도달하고자 한 대륙횡단철도의 건설, 파나마운하 개통 등 환태평양 무역의 강화로 인해 대규모 항구의 필요성 등을 통해 20세기 초반 환태평양 무역의 중심지로 그 모습을 갖추게 되었다. 결론 및 제언: 본 연구는 캘리포니아 연안 도시연구 자체가 제한적인 상황에서 로스앤젤레스의 형성과정을 역사적으로 고찰했다는 점에서 의의가 있으나, 후속연구에서는 다른 환태평양 연안 도시의 초기 형성과정과의 비교연구를 중심으로 논의의 장을 확장시켜야 할 것으로 사료된다.
Abstract
The study aims to examine the process of connection between the Pacific coast and the U.S. continent through the early formation of Los Angeles. To this end, a historical approach was applied to identify the historical specificity of the early Los Angeles formation process through reviewing existing documents. Los Angeles, which was only a small village after the Gold Rush, became the center of Pacific Rim trade in the early 20th century due to the need for large-scale ports such as the construction of transcontinental railroads to reach the Pacific Rim trade base. This study is meaningful in that it historically examined the formation process of Los Angeles in a situation where research related to Californian coastal city itself is limited, but scholarly discussion should be expanded in the follow-up study through comparative studies.
