초록
This is a comparative study of the Promethean Myth in Percy Bysshe Shelley’s Prometheus Unbound and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The authors’ myth-making reveals their ideas of the principle of life, along with their religious orientation, philosophical belief, and cultural understanding. In Prometheus Unbound, Percy Shelley recreates the tragic hero of Aeschylus and presents a new type of hero, a sympathetic and co-working victor. Mary Shelley, in contrast, models Hesiod’s epic hero in depicting Victor Frankenstein, an ambitious and reckless creator. Daring but not caring, Victor deserts his creation and aggravates the pain and isolation of the world. The Shelleyan Prometheus evokes the necessity of feminine qualities and the role of women in social improvement when he imparts a comprehensive understanding of science, religion, philosophy, and culture.
