Abstract
In this article, I present a comparative analysis of the frequency of the sentence-final expressions in the Japanese and Korean discourse of refusal, noda, sooda, yooda, kamoshirenai, geos-gata, and geodeun, in terms of the types of situation, subordinate/intimacy relations, gender, and the content of utterances. Also, I analyse the ways in which these sentence-final expressions are used as politeness strategies. In Japanese, noda is frequently used as a refusal expression, whilst in Korean, geos -gata, and geodeun, are frequently used for this purpose. The presumptive expressions in Japanese are less frequently used in the situation of refusal than geos-gata. There are some parallelisms between noda and geodeun. They are frequently used for close persons, they are characteristically used by females, they are used to satisfy the addressee’s positive face, and they serve as strategies for positive politeness that expresses the sense of intimacy. The two expressions, when used as refusal expressions, exhibit highly similar functions. By contrast, geos-gata, sooda, kamoshirenai, and yooda are all used to express the meaning of negative politeness or off-the-record in that they are used to blur the speaker’s intention of refusal or to avoid an assertion. The presumptive expressions in the two languages, however, display a clear point of contrast with regard to their uses variable-wise.
