Abstract

Japan was able to reclaim Ogasawara(小笠原) Islands from the United States thanks to Klaproth’s translation from Japanese into French of Sangoku tsran zusetsu (三國通覽圖說) written by Hayashi Shihei. In particular, Sangoku tsran zusetsu and Sangoku setsujochizu(三國接壤之圖) are frequently referenced in debates between Korea and Japan on the sovereignty over Dokdo as well as in descriptions of Japan’s case to recaptureOgasawara Islands from the United States. However, the book has been overlooked because it focuses only on the territorial issues among Korea, the United States, Japan and China. This study focuses on the Shinzo, a Japanese-Russian who appears to have assisted when Klaproth’s acquired and translated Sangoku tsran zusetsu and its attached maps. Klaproth was able to go to Irkutsk or Kykhta by becoming a member of the Russian delegation, and he got help from Shinzo with Japanese language when translating Sangoku tsran zusetsu into French. Knowledge of Joseon, including Korean alphabet (Hangeul), was also available thanks to Siebold's assistance. Klaproth's Sangoku tsran zusetsu contained detailed explanation to help Europeans understand. Therefore,it would be fair to regard it as a compilation rather than a translation. There is a possibility that Zeroku, who later entered Irkutsk after drifting away, helped Klaproth withChinese characters. Shinjo(新藏) was a sailor who was naturalized as Russianin Irkutskwhile sailing together with the captain of the ship, Tagokuya Kodayu(大黒屋光太夫) who was also from his hometown Mie Prefecture(三重県). While working as a Japanese teacher, he met Klaproth to help decipher Hayashi's book Sangoku tsran zusetsu . The publication of Sangoku tsran zusetsu in Japan in the far east of Asia has been researched as a prior study on how the French version was compiled by Germany-born Klaproth in Europe on the other side of the earth. As is known, it was published in Britain, not in Paris, France, because Klaproth had problems in procuring publishing costs and handed over the copyright to the publisher John Murray with the Translation Fund. As explained above,Sangoku tsran zusetsu and its attached maps were published in Europe with the help of Count Potocki of Poland, Humbold and Siebold of Germany and Japan-born Shinzo. Klaproth's Sangoku tsran zusetsu attempts to help Europeans to understand, thus it would be reasonable to regard it as a compilation rather than a mere translation.
