Abstract
This study analyzed Latin version of Father Kim Dae-geon's 「Map of Korea」 at the BnF, focusing on the islands on East Coast. With comparing the mother map-Donggukjido(東國地圖) and French version map to analyze the geographical information and place-names The research findings are summarized as follows: While Latin version map is based on Donggukjido, significant editing was performed. The geographical information on China and Manchuria reflects places Father Kim Dae-geon encountered while pioneering a new route into Korea. The densely depicted, nameless islands on the sea are newly depicted. Those island information reflects the significance on the sea routes at that time. Based on the depiction of islands on the East Sea, the shape and distribution of the unnamed islands in Hamgyeong-do and Gangwon-do are almost exactly the same. This shows that the base map is presumed to be a copy of the 「Dongguk Daejido東國大地圖)」 at Soongsil University and Kyujanggak. The fact that this large map was produced by combining provincial maps suggests that there were provincial maps depicting islands in detail at before time. This is supported by the provincial atlases, produced before the Donggukjido. The French version maps were modeled after the Latin version for geographical information. Comparison of place names such as islands and the revision of the contents of the Ganghwa Waterway area shows that it was not a simple copy. Bbibliographic information on Jeju Isands offers several implications for interpreting the map-maker of Latin version.
