러시아어는 ‘형동사’라고 알려진 4개의 분사를 가지고 있으며 이러한 분사, 즉 형동사의 체계는 매우 생산적이다. 본 논문은 형동사 체계와 관련하여 제기되고 있는 몇몇 논점에 관한 분석을 제공한다. 첫째, 통사적인 관점에서 볼 때, 형동사를 포함하는 관계절(participial relative clauses)은 통사적 주어가 존재하지 않는 환경에서 하나의 절로 구체화 되어야 한다. 이에 관해 두 가지 분석이 가능한데, 그 중 자립어휘통사론(Autolexical Syntax)의 체계가 러시아어 체계에 보다 적합하다. 형동사의 파생은 동사라는 통사적 자질로 인해 어휘레벨에서가 아니라 통사레벨에서 일어나야 한다는 논지를 제시하고 있다. 둘째, 형태론적인 관점에서 볼 때, 형동사 체계는 비록 다른 형태에서도 부분적인 상적 대립이 존재하더라도 과거 능동 형동사만이 완료상과 불완료상 사이의 완전한 양립을 보여준다. 이러한 형태적 자질은 본 논문에서 논의되는 세 번째 이슈인 형동사적 동사 형태의 의미론적 분석을 가능하게 한다. 형동사라는 명칭에도 불구하고 형동사는 일반적인 시제가 아닌 택시스(taxis 혹은 상대시제)를 표현한다. 상은 삽입된 형동사구의 형동사와 주절의 동사 사이에서 시간적인 관계를 생성하는 택시스와 상호작용한다. 완료상 형동사는 선행하는 택시스를 표현하는 반면 불완료상 형동사는 일반적으로 동시적 택시스를 표현한다.
