Abstract
This study explores the teaching competencies required for effectively conducting university instruction in heterogeneous classes—courses where Korean and international students with diverse linguistic, cultural, and academic backgrounds coexist. Utilizing the concept mapping methodology (Kane & Trochim, 2007), the study draws on the perspectives of ten university instructors with direct experience teaching such classes. Through a multi-step process including brainstorming, rating, categorization, and statistical analysis (MDS and HCA), a total of 61 competency statements were identified and visually structured. The analysis yielded six major clusters of teaching competencies: (1) instructional design and classroom management, (2) learner analysis and individualization, (3) assessment and feedback, (4) affective learning environment construction, (5) intercultural communication and interaction, and (6) Korean language teaching expertise. Among these, the ability to create an emotionally supportive classroom environment was perceived as the most essential. The findings underscore the need for instructors to develop context-sensitive, practice-oriented competencies tailored to the complexities of heterogeneous classes, offering valuable insights for faculty development and instructional improvement in higher education.
