Abstract

This paper analyzes the impact of the U.S. Cultural Cold War on the music and arts of East Asia, focusing on the Korean-language edition of the American monthly magazine Free World, which was distributed across the region during the Cold War. Free World employed editorial strategies aimed at instilling American-style liberalism and democracy, modernization in East Asia, and anti-communist ideology among Asian audiences. In particular, by repeatedly introducing the music, arts, prominent cultural figures, and cultural exchanges of various Asian countries, the magazine selectively presented a cultural model of “Free Asia” as imagined by the United States. In its coverage of culture and the arts, the magazine tended to “discover” or reframe traditional Asian cultures as objects of modernization from an American perspective. Music-related articles highlighted success stories of East Asian musicians in the United States, U.S. concert tours in Asia, and the role of music in fostering anti-communist solidarity across the region. Through such narratives, East Asian musicians were portrayed as professional, modern individuals who embraced American-style musical education and values, becoming part of the so-called “Free World.” However, the lives of the “Free East Asian” citizens highlighted in Free World reveal a process of cultural hegemony, modeled on the United States. In this process, traditional arts were often treated as exoticized legacies “discovered” by America, thereby marginalizing their significance. Ultimately, the magazine’s rhetoric of “freedom,” “solidarity,” and “cultural exchange” functioned as a cultural-political text, revealing how South Korean society and its musical world were subsumed into American modernity and Cold War ideology.
