Abstract

The ‘-i/hi/ri/gi-’ passive expressions, which are also called Korean morphological passive expressions, are acknowledged challenges for Chinese-speaking learners to master due to their extensive number as well as complex morphological and syntactic features, which surpass those of Chinese passive expressions. This paper aims to analyze the usage patterns of morphological passive expressions among Chinese-speaking learners by using the Korean learners corpus and to present implications for passive-related education based on theses findings. Firstly, the research on morphological passive expressions in the field of Korean language education and studies using Korean learners corpus is reviewed. Secondly, we explain the research materials and presents analysis procedures employed in this paper. Subsequently, the frequency analysis and error analysis are conducted to examine the usage patterns of Chinese-speaking Korean learners. The frequency analysis count a total of 86 passive verbs in the written data of Chinese-speaking learners, along with statistics on the usage frequency of each passive verb and number of samples based on learner's Korean language level. The error analysis part categorizes errors occurring in the passive verb, particle, and sentence form into eight types: passive verb form errors, verb selection errors Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ, agent particle errors, patient particle errors, inappropriate use of negative expressions, and inappropriate use of passive expressions. On this basis, a more detailed discussion is developed by taking representative verbs as examples. Using the analysis, we present implications for passive education by dividing it into form, syntax, meaning & discourse. This paper is significant in that it analyzes the morphological passive expressions directly produced by Chinese-speaking learners in a more natural language-use environment rather than in a controlled situation. Furthermore, this paper represents an advancement over previous studies to show the overall usage pattern of morphological passive expressions by conducting research with all ‘-i/hi/ri/ki-’ passive verbs as the subject of analysis, rather than being limited to a small number of passive verbs.
