Abstract
In the 1980s, Lee Oh-deok gradually turned toward a socially participatory educational movement, expanding and deepening his theories of writing and children's literature. Working within various education-related organizations, he devel- oped his discourse on writing and children's literature beyond the level of mere honest self-expression, extending it into the practice of “true life” and “true edu- cation,” and positioning it as a mechanism of democratic practice. His thought increasingly moved beyond the boundaries of the school to address contradictions within the broader social structure as well as issues of language. Based on this, the researcher views Lee Oh-deok’s critical discourse of the 1980s not as confined to the specific fields of education and literature, but as an attempt to embody “human education” and “universal ideas” through writing and children's literature. In particular, his work Our Writing, Written Correctly— which differs from his other writings—is not to be regarded simply as part of a short-term Korean language purification campaign. Rather, it is seen as a concrete practice of his consistently pursued writing philosophy and as an effort to achieve “the transformation of the world through the transformation of language.” This work thus reveals his ideological orientation to realize what he called “true life” through “language”. From the late 1980s to the early 1990s, his theory developed into an educa- tional philosophy with a definite form and system, and it was widely dis- seminated and accepted, thereby reaching a high degree of influence and universality. Yet, paradoxically, the establishment of his thought as a completed system also meant that it became less responsive to new demands with flexibility. Since the 1990s, Lee Oh-deok’s discourse has repeatedly reappeared and been remembered as a kind of “completed ideology,” functioning more as a fixed legacy than as a transformative force.
