Abstract
The essay examines Pope’s “Second Satire of the Second Book of Horace Imitated” as a search for the simple life of the country gentleman. The poem opens with Bethel’s sermon about the simple life that Horace praised in his poem. Bethel presents his viewpoint about the simple life. He at first puts emphasis on simple dinner. Then he mentions the virtues of the country gentleman like feeding the poor and giving alms to them. Pope says that he will follow Bethel’s sermon and imitate him. After that Pope describes himself as a country gentleman. His house is presented as a center of hospitality. Pope shows the ethics of hospitality by saying that he will not close the door against strangers and welcome anyone to his house. He will offer his guests homegrown fruit or local produce. In short, Pope sees himself living the life of the ideal country gentleman. But Pope realizes that he can’t follow the ideal country gentleman’s life like Bethel’s because there is a big difference between Bethel and him. While Bethel has his own house and land, Pope does not have his own house or land. Since he has no land to rent to tenants, he can’t live like a country gentleman. In conclusion, he can’t follow the ideal of the country gentleman who shows the true hospitality and puts emphasis on the welfare of the local community, so he wants to be satisfied with the pursuit of a simple life in retirement.
