Abstract

The essay examines Pope’s “Second Epistle of the Second Book of Horace Imitated” as a struggle between retirement and participation. The occasion for writing this poem is related to Bolingbroke’s decision to put his estate up for sale, leave England for good, and settle in France. He is a major Tory politician who tried to overthrow Walpole’s Whig government but failed. Through Bolingbroke’s case, Pope considers whether retirement or commitment is a right choice in the corrupt English society. Pope opens with his decision to go to the country and not write any more satires against Walpole. He at first puts emphasis on the virtues of retirement. He can enjoy his peaceful life in the country, where he is not pestered by would-be writers. But he soon satirizes the corrupt clergy and landowners, who neglect their duties like helping the poor and giving money to them. They don’t know the ethics of hospitality. Therefore he needs to criticize them by writing satires. On the other hand, the poet wants to leave London and live peacefully in the country. In short, the ending of the poem does not conclude whether he will choose retirement or participation. The poem is torn between retirement and participation.
