Abstract
This study investigated the relationship between appearance of upper respiratory tract infection and changes in salivary IgA secretion in male collegiate Taekwondo players (n=31) during exercise training of 4 weeks. Saliva samples were collected before and 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after exercise training. In addition, the saliva samples were collected immediately after appeared by URTI symptoms. The changes in Saliva flow rate were not significantly different at time course, and between appearance and non-appearance subjects. However, SIgA concentration in appearance subjects was decreased significantly after 4 weeks of exercise training (p<.05). Similarly, SIgA secretion rate in appearance subjects was decreased significantly after 3 and 4 weeks of exercise training (p<.05). Moreover, SIgA concentration and SIgA secretion rate in appearance subjects were decreased significantly after 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks of exercise training compared with non-appearance subjects (p<.05). It was confirmed in this study that appearance of URTI may closely correlate with changed SIgA levels, and suggested that SIgA levels may be useful for condition assessment of athletes.
