Abstract

The achievements of Lee Kun-chang’s poetry were relatively less discussed than his prose, but it is not that he was not excellent at poetry. This study reviews the records of Lee Kun-chang’s Youngjae Poetry tale, and examine what kind of poem he used as an example and what his thoughts on poetry were. With this approach, I believe it can aid future studies of Lee Kun-chang's poetry and clarify its criticism significance. Youngjae Poetry tale discussed in this paper is a material that was published in the 『Maeilsinbo』 of the Japanese colonial era newspaper and is an poetry written by Lee Kun-chang. By giving an overview of the contents of the five rules of Lee Kun-chang’s Youngjae Poetry Tale, We were able to confirm that he was a critic who offered subjective critiques. Even a poet recognized as a master in the history of literature was overwhelmed by his reputation and tried to evaluate him strictly under clear supervision without overspending indiscriminate praise, and he made a new evaluation from his own point of view without harvesting the criticisms of his senior critics as gold and jade birds. It also demonstrates the will to fairly evaluate the contemporary celebrities by calling them into the forum of public opinion. It is also noteworthy in Lee Kun-chang’s view of literature that he was familiar with the problematic figure of Jeon Gyeom-ik.
