Abstract

This study aimed to examine the process of small school occurrence due to population movement in Gwangju from an urban planning perspective. The distribution change of elementary schools in Gwangju was examined in relation to land development districts by analyzing educational statistics data. The characteristics of small elementary schools by type were identified and the management direction of small elementary schools is suggested. Gwangju has 30 small elementary schools of four types: original downtown, old residential area, elementary school adjacent, and agricultural and fishing village. Small schools have occurred in the old areas that remain due to population concentration in new land development districts and reconstruction and redevelopment areas according to urban planning. Areas that are planned for redevelopment and reconstruction have a high possibility of regaining vitality. But there will be more areas that are not. The problem of small schools will become more serious in the long term. To prevent the slumification of these areas and to perform the role of schools as public goods, policy planning and countermeasures are needed.
