Abstract
This study examines the aesthetics and idiom of Johann Jakob Froberger's instrumental laments through an analysis of his Tombeau, an example of 17th century program music. Froberger composed his Tombeau by drawing upon the concept of Ars Moriendi, memorial practices, literary tombeau, and the French lute tombeau tradition. He established harpsichord tombeau idiom by synthesizing elements of lute idiom, vocal laments, and improvisational keyboard genres such as unmeasured preludes and toccatas. While Froberger incorporates lute techniques like the ‘style brisé’ and ‘campanella’ within the framework of a pavane and allemande, he exploits the harpsichord's capabilities to explore a wider range, more complex texture and richer sonority. His instrumental laments transcend mere expressions of mourning, encompassing internalized and philosophical reflections on existence. By integrating vocal and instrumental idioms with improvisational qualities, Froberger played a pivotal role in establishing the artistic value of instrumental lament. His laments stand as significant examples of attempts to express specific emotion and narratives in instrumental music.
