Abstract

This study examined university students’ perceptions of forensic science and their understanding of digital forensics and investigative psychology techniques (e.g., forensic hypnosis) in the Chungcheong and Jeolla regions of South Korea. An online survey was administered via Google Forms to 181 university students and recent graduates between November 17, 2023 and January 19, 2024. The questionnaire measured (a) perceptions of investigative fairness, (b) perceptions of investigative agencies’ use of forensic techniques, (c) overall perceptions of forensic science and perceived utility (reliability) of forensic techniques, and (d) levels of understanding of digital forensics and investigative psychology. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests, paired-samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA with Scheffé post- hoc tests, and Pearson correlation analyses (IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0). Results indicated that participants generally viewed the use of forensic techniques by investigative agencies positively, whereas self-reported understanding of digital forensics and investigative psychology remained near the scale midpoint, suggesting a neutral level of understanding. Perceptions of investigative fairness and perceived use of forensic techniques did not significantly differ by academic year or major, and no significant mean difference was found between understanding of digital forensics and investigative psychology. However, higher understanding of both domains was significantly associated with stronger perceptions of the utility of forensic techniques. These findings suggest that strengthening students’ domain knowledge may enhance perceived credibility and utility of forensic methods and highlight the need for targeted educational and outreach efforts, particularly for less familiar techniques. Limitations include the regional and convenience nature of the sample, indicating the need for broader follow-up studies.
