The purpose of this paper is to explain the contraction of VyV in Korean. The contraction of VyV was effected by the two types of changes: bayam＞baem and bayam＞byam ‘snake’. These changes are explained as the following chain of changes. ＞[pɛːm] [pajam]＞[pɛjam]＞[pɛam]｛ ＞[pjaːm] The change [pajam]＞[pɛjam] is a case of regressive frontness assimilation (umlaut). The change [pɛam]＞[pɛːm] can be viewed as a case of vowel deletion accompanied by compensatory lengthening. It can also be viewed as a case of vowel assimilation. However, there was not an intermediate stage like [pɛɛm] between [pɛam] and [pɛːm]. The above-mentioned vowel assimilation V1V2＞V1ː is the process of gradual encroachment whereby V1 becomes longer and longer at the expense of the length of V2. The following example is evidence of the process of encroachment: [sɛːalʃimi](＜[sɛalʃimi] ‘rice ball’) (where [a] represents extremely shortened vowel [a]). The change [pɛam]＞[pjaːm] is a case of glide formation accompanied by compensatory lengthening. There may have been intermediate stages [peam] and [piam] between [pɛam] and [pjaːm]. For the change seoyangcheol＞saengcheol ‘tinplate’, the following processes should be set up: [səjaŋ]＞[sejaŋ]＞[seaŋ]＞[sɛaŋ]＞[sɛːŋ]. The change [seaŋ]＞[sɛaŋ] is a case of regressive height assimilation. For the change doyaji＞dwaeji ‘pig’, the following processes are required: [tojaʤi]＞[tøjaʤi]＞[tøaʤi]＞[tœaʤi]＞[twɛaʤi]＞[twɛːʤi]. The diphthongization of [œ] to [wɛ] is due to the fact that [œ] is highly unnatural.
