Frequency Distribution of Noun Collocations in Korean High School English Textbooks: A Corpus-based Analysis

This study aims to provide the frequency distribution of collocation patterns of 20 nouns in 35 Korean high school English textbooks and to compare the results with those in the British National Corpus (BNC) and Longman Lancaster Corpus (LLC) provided in Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE). For this study, the corpus constructed in Moon (2008) is used and the concordance listings generated by WordSmith Tools 4.0 are analyzed. The results show that collocation types of the nouns are mostly underrepresented in the textbooks. It is also found that the frequency distribution patterns in the two corpora are different from each other although the most frequent collocation type of each noun mostly coincides. The results in this study indicate that there may be a mismatch between actual use of English and what is taught to second language learners and that more various collocation patterns actually used by native speakers need to be provided in the Korean high school English textbooks.
