A series of the corpus-based studies have shown that there is a significant mismatch between actual use of English and what is taught to second language learners (Holmes 1988, Ljung 1990, Biber et al 1998 among others). The goals of this study are to provide the frequency distribution of grammar patterns of 18 verbs in 35 Korean high school English textbooks and to compare the results with those in the British National Corpus (BNC) and Longman Lancaster Corpus (LLC) provided in Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE). For this study, the reading parts of the textbooks are computerised as a corpus and the concordance listings generated by WordSmith Tools 4.0 are analyzed. The results indicate that most of the verbs in the textbooks show a similar distribution pattern in the BNC/LLC. It is also found that some grammar patterns are either overrepresented or underrepresented in the textbooks.
