Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to empirically examine how social interaction experiences influence the subjective happiness of individuals with developmental disabilities from their own perspectives. Method: Using data from the 2023 Survey on the Work and Life of People with Developmental Disabilities, 988 valid responses were analyzed. Social interaction experience included five sub-factors: making friends, expressing anger, possessing money, experiencing bullying, and experiencing physical assault. Subjective happiness was measured by re-coding responses to “Do you feel happy with your life these days?” into a binary variable. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 through correlation and hierarchical logistic regression. Results: The model explained 42% of the variance in the subjective happiness. Making friends(B=.375, p<.05, Exp(B)=1.454) and expressing anger(B=.629, p<.001, Exp(B)=1.875) had significant positive effects, while experiencing bullying(B=-.490, p<.05, Exp(B)=.612) had a negative impact. Possessing money and physical assault were not significant. Conclusion: The findings highlight the importance of emotional expression within social interactions in enhancing happiness. In particular, expressing anger in safe environments appears to promote positive psychological well-being among individuals with developmental disabilities.
