Abstract
Social exclusion has negative effects on health. Accordingly, various studies have been conducted on the topic of social exclusion in Korea. However, the social exclusion gap is still large for people with disabilities compared to people without disabilities. Among various types of disability, it is reported that the social exclusion of people with developmental disabilities is more serious than other types of disability. Nevertheless, there are no studies related to social exclusion and the health of people with developmental disabilities at home and abroad. Therefore, this study is the first attempt to test that the effect of social exclusion on subjective health and depression of people with developmental disabilities. The analysis data of this study used data from the 1th wave (2016) to the 4th wave (2019) of the Panel Survey of Employment for persons with disabilities. Of the samples, 177 persons with developmental disabilities (total of 708 cases) were used for the analysis, and a longitudinal study was conducted using Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE). Based on the QIC(quasi-likelihood information criterion) value, auto correlation assumption was assumed unstructured correlation. The independent variables of social exclusion included economic exclusion, housing exclusion, relationship exclusion, participation exclusion, and medical exclusion. The results of this study are as follows. First, social exclusion affects significantly adversely on the subjective health of persons with developmental disabilities: economic exclusion-no employment, relationship exclusion-discrimination experience and medical exclusion. Second, depression is significantly affected by substandard housing conditions(square meter), experience of discrimination and non-participation in daily life. These results suggest the need to resolve social exclusion in order to improve subjective health and depression of people with developmental disabilities.
