Marine traffic of late Yuan Dynasty is important to extension of the eastern end of ‘the 13th century world system’ as well as transport of taxes. As it dominated business and distribution at the coastal area along with activating international and national trade, smugglers were actively engaged in business. In particular, Fangguozhen absorbed droppers from marine traffic at the coastal area and islands and continued to invade them to involve in it. He reinforced his power through marine traffic and trade at Zhejiang as he was appointed as an official. Under rapidly changing national conditions and overseas support, Fangguozhen used marine traffic and diplomacy to seek for a maximum of profit within confined areas and preserve his power. However, he and his power declined according to foundation of Ming Dynasty.
Abstract
