Abstract
Reviewing the existing discourse on ‘ijeong', sentiment diversion, in the words of ‘ijeongtangshim(移情蕩心)'(to divert sentiment and disturb mind) in Yulgok(栗谷)'s Jeongunmyoseonseon, this study tries to correct the errors in its translation and find the true meaning of the word. The sentiment diversion has been considered as ‘empathy’. However, it is hard to find any empathy from the sentiment diversion in traditional sense of meaning. In consideration of the context, Yulgok's ‘ijeongtangshim' is based on his ‘shimseongron(心性論)'(a theory to consider analytically our mind). The sentiment diversion, to transfer sentiment, can be considered in three categories: First, Yulgok's Jeongunmyoseonseon says that sentiment can be transferred from the good to the bad to reach to the right state of mind or the bad to the good to reach to the disturbed state of mind. His ‘johoisujo(彫繪繡藻)․ijeongtangshim' is against ‘jonyangseongchal(存養省察)'. ‘Johoisujo․ijeongtangshim' means that our mind expresses joy of life to others with the help of literary techniques, rather than the good, while ‘jonyangseongchal' means that reading our mind and spreading our sound mind to the world erases the dirts in our mind. By ‘jonyangseongchal' to read our mind, turn down the bad mind caused by the lure of outer things, and set up our mind, we can keep our mind right, ‘jonshim(存心)'. Therefore, Yulgok's request for the poem “to read our mind, to spread our sound mind to the world, and consequently to erase the dirts in our mind" was mentioned to keep our mind right. Therefore, ‘jonyangseongchal' leads to the right state of sentiment and ‘Johoisujo' to the disturbed state of sentiment. The ‘sentiment diversion' in Yulgok's Jeongunmyoseonseon is caused by the communication with outer things and the poem by reading books. The poem in Jeongunmyoseonseon can spread our sound mind to the world and keep our mind right. Second, his 'sentiment diversion' can be translated into the transformation from the resolved mind to the other direction. Third, ‘sentiment diversion' means ‘to turn one's mind toward things'. It has nothing to do with empathy. To conclude, the sentiment diversion, to transfer sentiment, can be translated into three different meanings depending upon its situation and has no meaning of empathy.
