Abstract

This qualitative case study examines how a middle-aged woman who experienced spousal bereavement reconstructed her mourning experience and achieved identity integration through the narrative activity of poetry. Spousal bereavement constitutes an ontological shock that destabilizes personal identity and disrupts one’s worldview, posing long-term challenges of readjustment, particularly for middle-aged women in contemporary society with extended life expectancies. One participant engaged in 14 sessions of bibliotherapy counseling over nine months, using five poems as mediating texts. Data were collected from the participants’ self-narratives and the counselors’ clinical notes. The analysis focused on how the narrative activity of poetry externalized, integrated, and re-signified the emotions of mourning. The theoretical framework drew on Ricoeur’s theory of mimesis, Winnicott’s concept of playing, Neimeyer’s meaning reconstruction theory, and Worden’s tasks of mourning. Through the narrative activity of poetry, the participant gradually externalized repressed emotions, restructured her relationship with the deceased, and integrated the experience of loss into a renewed sense of identity. This process revealed that poetry facilitated both emotional articulation and narrative transformation, serving as a mediating space between grief and meaning-making. The findings suggest that the narrative activity of poetry functions not merely as emotional expression but also as a therapeutic mechanism that enables individuals to reconfigure their life narratives after loss. Although limited to a single case, this study provides empirical insights into the therapeutic potential of poetic narration in bibliotherapy counseling and offers foundational data for future program development.
